Cleveland Champions Sustainability
2LeBron James and the Cavs were not able to bring a championship to Cleveland. And no other major sports team in Cleveland has been able to do it for 50 years. Maybe professional sports is not really the way forward.
Some in Cleveland are putting a lot of faith in sustainability – engaging the region’s 1.6 million people in “building an economic engine to create a green city on a blue lake.”

Gregg,
I would agree that Cleveland’s willingness to take the initiative to promote sustainability in the region has been a wonderful thing to see. Our region has been making such efforts for years, but it is great that we are now making a concerted effort to the get the government, businesses, and non-profits all on board together for one common goal - to make Cleveland the proverbial green city on a blue lake. Cleveland took another step in the right direction in March, when it passed an ordinance giving preference in procurement to vendors that are certified as sustainable. COSE & the Greater Cleveland Partnership are playing a role in this effort through our energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives, and we are actively engaging with Sustainable Cleveland 2019. We are also partnering with Green Plus to get local businesses certified in sustainability. Hopefully everyone’s efforts will continue to bear fruit. Cleveland is already one of the nation’s leaders in the local food movement - we have more farmers’ markets per capita than any other city. Clearly we are on the right track.
